Ada had never seen a castle so grand. Windsor Castle rose in warm grey stone, with towers, a deep moat, and a drawbridge that could lift like a giant gate. Leo, a trainee knight in shiny armor, smiled at her. Mrs Finch, the castle keeper, hurried over. "The parade of shields begins soon," she said, "but Sir Bram’s bright coat of arms banner is missing!" Ada gasped. Sir Bram looked worried, because his banner had to hang on his shield for the celebration to begin. "Shall we search together?" asked Ada, and everyone nodded.
Ada crouched beside the stone path. Tiny star marks sparkled on the ground, one after another. "A clue!" she said. Leo nodded. They followed the stars into the armour room, where helmets gleamed and banners brushed the walls. The room smelled dusty and old, like books in a quiet library. Then the trail led up narrow tower stairs above the moat. Ada’s legs felt tired, but she kept going. At the top, they found a small room with bright windows and a neat table, but the banner was still nowhere in sight.
A final star shimmered at the door of the tapestry chamber. Inside, a huge cloth showed knights, castles, and tall walls. Behind it, Ada spotted the missing banner at last. But a gentle breeze lifted the bright fabric toward an open window. "Quickly!" cried Leo. Ada grabbed one end of a long parade pole, and Leo held the other. They moved carefully, step by step, until the pole hooked the banner just in time. Together, they pulled it back and laughed with relief.
Sir Bram beamed when they brought the banner back. He placed it proudly on his shield, where the bright design shone like a little sun. Then the great bell rang, and the parade began. Sir Bram rode across the drawbridge, and his horse walked calmly with a happy prance. Everyone cheered and waved. Afterward, Mrs Finch smiled at Ada. "You have a careful eye," she said. "Would you like to draw your own coat of arms for our wall display?" Ada grinned. She had come for a visit, and now she had helped the castle shine.
